How to use Advanced Captions in Premiere Pro

Advanced Captions creates animated subtitles from your audio. A caption chunk is a short, timed group of words. A preset defines how those words are arranged, styled and animated. This guide uses Premiere Pro 2025 on macOS; the example preset is Orange Script.

1. Prepare your sequence

Open your project and activate the sequence you want to caption. Make sure the dialogue plays correctly. Finish edits that change the timing of the dialogue before generating captions, then save the project.
For a familiar layout, use Premiere Pro's Editing workspace. Keep the Program Monitor and timeline visible while working in AutoCut.

2. Open Advanced Captions

Open AutoCut from Premiere Pro's Window > Extensions menu and choose AutoCaptions Advanced. If a setup screen asks you to install components and restart Premiere Pro, complete those steps, save your project and fully restart Premiere Pro before continuing.

3. Select the audio and language

Choose Entire timeline or an In/Out range, select the audio track containing the dialogue and validate the sections. Select the language actually spoken in the recording. For this English recording, choose English.
Click Open Caption Editor (Style & Transcription) to generate the transcript. You can also use Choose SRT File or load a previous transcription. The audio language is the source language; translation is a separate step.

4. Apply a preset and review the transcript

The preset library opens after transcription. Select a design and confirm Apply 1 preset to the selected chunks. This example uses Orange Script. Review the words, names and punctuation in the editor. Play short and long captions to check their timing and layout.

5. Preview and import

Position the captions so they do not cover the speaker. Click Import into Premiere Pro and wait for the completion message. Play the sequence in Premiere Pro to check the imported captions, then save the project.
Importing captions and exporting a finished video are separate steps. Use Premiere Pro's normal export workflow to create your final video.
