# How to import a SRT file in AutoCaptions?

An **SRT file** (SubRip Subtitle file) is a standard subtitle format. It contains the **caption text** along with **timestamps** that define when each line appears and disappears in the video.
You can import an existing SRT file into AutoCaptions and use it in your project. Here’s how:

1. Launch **AutoCaptions**
2. **Define Section** & validate
3. In the **“Import Captions from SRT file”** section, click on **“Choose SRT file”**
4. Select your file and click on “**Open Caption Editor**

||| ⚠️ If you import your own transcript, the word-by-word animations won’t be as precise as those generated directly by AutoCut.

**When should you import an SRT file?**

Importing an SRT is useful if:
* You’ve already created or translated your captions elsewhere
* You want to re-use captions from another project
This is especially helpful for multilingual content, corporate videos, or videos with a predefined script.

| 🆕 AutoCaptions now lets you automatically translate your captions. So there’s no need to import a file that’s already translated — just use the built-in translation feature!
